June 2025 Market Update

Ocean Freight Rates

Uncertainty continues to cloud the outlook for summer peak season importing, particularly in the ocean freight sector. In April, many U.S. importers halted shipments from China due to the steep tariffs, prompting carriers to reduce available capacity. However, with the recent temporary pause on those tariffs, importers have resumed their shipments, driving up demand for vessels while capacity remains limited. In response, ocean freight carriers implemented general rate increases (GRIs) and peak season surcharges (PSS) as of June 1. With demand outpacing supply, further rate hikes are anticipated later this month.

Tariffs

The 90-day pause on tariffs is approaching its expiration, with duties on imports from all countries—except China—set to resume on July 9, and those from China on August 11. However, there is still considerable uncertainty around whether new tariff rates will actually take effect on those dates, leaving importers and logistics providers in a state of cautious anticipation.

Crop Calendar

Please refer to the calendars below for key information on fruit and vegetable harvest months, ideal contract periods, and projected arrival dates for major crop categories. Updates on the lychee and cherry crops are anticipated in the coming weeks, while news regarding peaches and peppers is expected in early August. For apricots, the growing season is now underway in the northern hemisphere. However, due to unfavorable weather conditions, yields are projected to be lower than usual, which is likely to drive prices higher. As such, this is an ideal time to begin contracting for apricots
